Plain-English glossary
Web Format Glossary
Use this glossary when working with web text, links, JSON data, images or accessibility checks.
What this glossary is for
Small formatting terms can cause real errors. A broken JSON quote, encoded link character, distorted image ratio or weak contrast value can change how content works online.
Key terms
JSON
A structured text format for data. Objects use braces, arrays use brackets, names and string values use double quotes, and missing commas or quotes break the format.
URL encoding
A way to make spaces and special characters safe inside URLs. For example, a space may become %20.
Character count
The number of letters, spaces, punctuation and symbols in text. Some platforms limit text by characters rather than words.
Word count
The number of words in a text. Useful for article length, reading time and writing targets.
Aspect ratio
The relationship between width and height, such as 16:9. Keeping the same ratio prevents stretched images.
Pixel dimensions
The width and height of an image in pixels. Total pixels are width multiplied by height.
Contrast ratio
A number comparing foreground and background colors. Higher contrast usually improves readability.
How to use the terms
Read the definition first, then open the calculator that uses the same term. Change one input at a time so you can see which number drives the result.
