Health Planning Sheets

BMI Calculator

Calculate body mass index from height and weight, with the standard adult BMI category.

How this tool works

BMI = weight in kg / height in metres squared. BMI is a screening estimate and does not diagnose health.

What to do with the answer

Calculate body mass index from height and weight, with the standard adult BMI category. The useful part is not just the first answer; it is checking whether the answer still makes sense when the uncertain number changes.

Quick check

  • Read the result label first so you know whether it is monthly, yearly, daily, a percentage, a date or a total.
  • Change the input you are least sure about and compare the second answer with the first.
  • Use a related guide or worksheet when the result affects a bill, budget, health target, study plan or purchase.

Use BMI as a screening number, not a diagnosis

BMI compares weight with height. It is widely used because it is quick and simple, but it does not measure body fat directly and it does not know muscle mass, waist size, age-related body composition, ethnicity, pregnancy or medical history.

Worked example

Two adults can have the same BMI and very different health pictures. An athlete with high muscle mass and a sedentary person with less muscle may land in the same category. That is why BMI is better as a broad screening estimate than as a final judgement about health.

Things to double-check

The standard adult BMI categories are not designed for children, pregnancy or detailed clinical assessment. If a result affects health decisions, compare it with waist measurements, activity, blood markers, symptoms and professional medical advice.

How to use the result sensibly

A useful BMI check is a starting question: does this number suggest that another measurement or conversation would be worthwhile? If the answer is close to a category boundary, avoid overreacting to a tiny change. Weight can move day to day from water, food, training and hormones, so a trend over several weeks is usually more useful than one entry.

Next step

Read BMI vs Body Fat and Calorie Deficit and Maintenance Guide if the next question is about energy balance rather than BMI category alone.

A better way to use this page

Run one realistic example, then run one cautious version. For a cost page that might mean a higher price or longer time. For a date page it might mean a different deadline. For a health, study or work page it might mean a more conservative target.

If both answers point to the same next step, the result is easier to trust as a rough planning number. If they are very different, the input you changed is the one to check before you rely on the answer.
